  • Driving innovation in genomics

GENEWIZ, a leader in genomics services, from Azenta Life Sciences, sought to expand its operations with a state-of-the-art laboratory in Oxford. This move was driven by the need to support UK scientists with cutting edge Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies and expert research management. Having services and expertise locally is a great benefit for UK scientists, especially post Brexit as sample shipping and data storage have become more complex when using European-based suppliers.

  • Delivering a high-functioning lab

GENEWIZ had a clear vision for their new lab, requiring us to transform their concepts into a practical and high-performing space. We collaborated closely with their team, developing room data sheets with each discipline to ascertain the processes and technical requirements that underpin the functionality of each lab. The design of the lab spaces was shaped around the specific equipment and services required in each area, with bespoke benching to suit each unique requirement and a walk-in fridge and freezer for secure sample storage.

  • Designing for precision and safety

The new facility features a laboratory with an adjoining write-up space, allowing seamless transitions between experimental and documentation activities. The multifunctional write-up space also serves as an office environment where staff can step away from the lab space. With staff travelling between office and lab space, it was crucial to ensure an appropriate pressure regime to maintain the integrity and safety of the environment, preserving sterile conditions in critical areas.

  • Sustainable and safe solutions

In the office space, we installed a new HVAC system to serve both the office and adjoining write-up areas. An entirely new mechanical and electrical (M&E) system was installed in the laboratory, ensuring a self-contained setup that prevents the transfer of harmful substances between the lab and office spaces.

  • Maximising space efficiency and supporting business growth

One of the key challenges was accommodating the additional plant required for the lab within a limited office footprint. Our technical team worked meticulously to integrate these components without compromising the functionality or aesthetics of the workspace, ensuring a seamless and efficient environment.

The new laboratory is a cornerstone of GENEWIZ’s strategy to increase its European presence and UK support. The facility’s advanced capabilities will empower GENEWIZ to continue supporting UK scientists’ scientific discoveries with greater efficiency and reliability.
